WHO:   You! People who live in the real world. People willing to actively and politely participate in an open and honest chapter-by-chapter book discussion pertaining to the real-world issues raised in the story: faith, sexual morality, various cultural and religious “beliefs,” and how they shape political ideology, religion, and philosophy of life. No formal training or education is required—only an open heart and a curiosity about what makes us tick, and how our beliefs affect our lives and shape world around us, sometimes with unanticipated consequences. A pledge to “be present” mentally and physically is also appreciated.

WHAT:  A limited-time discussion group to read and discuss the myriad issues raised in my upcoming novel, A Secret of the Universe. The discussions will be recorded and podcasted over the internet.

WHY:  So that anyone can be part of the “virtual discussion” surrounding this book, and so that everyone has access to hear and better understand some disparate reactions to this provocative and thought-provoking story (if I do say so myself:-). Also, to demonstrate interfaith tolerance and the importance of intellectually honest dialogue. Whether we admit it or not, what we believe about potentially unknowable realms, or even faith healing or alternative medical cures, can have profound impact on our lives, and on the world around us. From 9/11 and terrorism, to our culture wars here at home—issues like stem cell research, abortion, right to die, gay marriage, or sex crimes—our particular religions, philosophies, and worldviews have dramatic and far-reaching impact.

HOW MANY: 8 to 10 individuals: the broader the range, the better. The group will hopefully include clergy from at least two different belief systems; three “everyday” Christians without any special religious training; atheists or agnostics; and two or three believers from non-Christian traditions.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME:     A free copy of the book; fellowship; regular conversation in a trusting and intimate group—over coffee and a snack; a cool interpersonal experience; a chance to broaden your horizons with people of differing worldviews and religious/philosophical backgrounds.

WHERE: To be determined, but somewhere comfortable where recording quality can be controlled.

WHEN: Beginning in August 5th and proceeding through four Sunday evening meetings: August 12th, 19th, and 26th from 6 pm to 8:30 pm.  (See the suggested syllabus in PDF form HERE.)

WHAT ELSE IS REQUIRED:  It is also expected that participants will read the appropriate sections of the book prior to each discussion, and arrive prepared to discuss and participate the relevant chapters.

WHAT IT IS NOT:  This is not a focus group or solicitation of input on the book. This is about reaction to the book, and the merit or lack of merit to the various characters’ positions and statements. It is about the group’s dialogue and the discussion, and offering that gift of quality discourse to others, from which insights and knowledge can be shared.
